Chapter Thirteen

Before her husband died, Audria became a big part of the success of the businesses he owned by working as a friendly spy, gathering dirt and important business information to keep him two steps ahead of his competitors. She did this by befriending the wives of the most successful businessmen in Atlanta. Since his death she’d also befriended the powerful women in the area and tonight they would all be meeting for their monthly dinner. The meetings were still very important to Audria, but now everyone felt sorry for her and freely gave her information that would help her businesses succeed.

This month they met at Houston's, a famous restaurant in the heart of the city of Buckhead. It was always a fashion show for the ladies. They went out and bought the latest fashion in clothes and wore their most expensive accessories. They were housewives of Atlanta but rich like the housewives of Orange County. Being fashionably late was a signature characteristic of all the ladies. So those who thought they were arriving late, but were really early, sat at the bar, ordered drinks and appetizers, then waited to watch the other ladies make an entrance.

Audria’s late husband taught her that timing was a skill used by those with power. ‘Never seem to be impatient or hurried’ and that’s just how she entered the restaurant - as if she had no worries. Dressed in an all-black plunging neckline jumpsuit with black peep toe stilettos, Audria used the foyer of Houston’s as a fashion runway. Her diamond flower pendant glittered under the dimmed lights.

“Girl, you sure do know how to make an entrance.” one of the woman said to Audria.

“Well, thank you. How are you ladies doing tonight?” Audria asked, bending to kiss each lady on the cheek.

They all responded that they were well.

“There are enough of us here now, let’s have the host seat us at our table.” There were about fourteen of them who met up every month but tonight only eleven showed up.

On Thursday evenings, the famous eatery was not as packed as it would be on the weekend. Not too many people waiting to be seated and that allowed Audria’s group to reserve a section that would seat twenty at peak hours. They followed the host on the black marble flooring and under faint track lighting that hung from a rare and beautiful red oak wooden ceiling. They were aware of the stares that came their way as they walked - lustful looks from the men and evil looks from the women they were with. The host led them up a wide, twirling staircase to their section that overlooked the restaurant. The ladies took their seats.

“Did y’all hear what happen to Lisa?” One of the ladies said after sipping from her wine glass. No one responded. “Her husband was arrested for fraud and might be facing at least five years in prison. The bank will start repossessing after his sentencing.”

Wide eyes and gasps from all the ladies at the table.
